Melbourne Cup Day to be Ballarat public holiday

Ballarat City Council has selected Melbourne Cup Day as its public holiday for 2020.

It follows a decision by the Ballarat Agricultural and Pastoral Society to cancel the 2020 Ballarat Show, with the municipal public holiday usually held on Ballarat Show Day.

This year Show Day would have been November 13 but instead Council has opted to have Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday 3 November as its public holiday.

In March 2017, Council voted for Ballarat Show Day to be the municipal public holiday for 2017-2020 instead of Melbourne Cup Day.

A third option for this year, Eureka Day on Thursday 3 December, was ruled out as being unsuitable as it is mid-week and also there is still likely to be limitations on gatherings and events.

It was also recommended further consultation on the municipal public holiday be undertaken next year before any decisions are made on the date for 2021 and beyond.
