Since the COVID-19 Stage 3 restrictions were put into effect on Tuesday 24 March, the City of Ballarat’s Pass on Glass drop-off sites have experienced a significant increase in glass disposal.

Early indications show there has been approximately 15% spike in glass volumes over the past month.

To accommodate for this demand, the City of Ballarat Waste Services team have expanded the capacity of several of its sites and have increased waste collection service schedules from four to five times a week.

Officers are now monitoring each site to determine what adjustments to the service are required to meet current demand.

The City of Ballarat currently has eight Pass on Glass drop-off sites, which are located at:

Transfer Station , 119 Gillies Street South, Alfredton. (no waste voucher needed)
Coltman Plaza Shopping Centre car park
Eastwood Street Shopping Centre carpark (south west corner) near the Ballarat Police Station
Midvale Shopping Centre, 2/1174 Geelong Road, Mount Clear
Buninyong, Buninyong Recreation Reserve
Ballarat Greyhound Racing Club, via Sutton St entrance
Miners Rest General Store
Stockland Wendouree near MyCar service centre
The City of Ballarat Waste Services team wants to remind everyone to be courteous when taking glass to the drop-off sites and only travel to the drop-off sites if it is essential. They want all residents to be conscious of not overfilling the skip bins at the eight designated drop-off sites, and not dumping their glass near the site.

If residents do turn up to find any of the bins full or in the process of being replaced, they can take their glass bottles and jars to City of Ballarat’s Gilles Street Transfer Station, which has a larger capacity.

Residents are not required to use vouchers at this glass drop-off location – it is free.

The Transfer Station is open Monday-Friday: 8am-4pm. Weekends and Public Holidays: 10am-4pm.

It is important to note that traffic management practices at the Transfer Station may change throughout the day to manage peaks in visitation in accordance with social distancing rules. Please remain patient and pay attention to onsite staff at all times.

Currently all glass drop-off sites are:

Advising users not to fill above the red tape fitted to each skip bin
Inspected multiple times each day to ensure cleanliness and safety and on call as required
Fitted with temporary fencing for safety
Displaying Council contact details for residents to report any issues.
