Ballarat Mayor welcomes remote council meeting legislation

City of Ballarat Mayor Cr Ben Taylor has welcomed a Victorian Government announcement that legislation has been introduced to allow for councils to meet remotely.

Cr Taylor said he had been advocating to the Local Government Minister Adem Somyurek for several weeks for meetings to be held from the safety of the Councillor’s own homes.

Cr Taylor said it was a very sensible decision by the Victorian Government.

“We, as a Council, welcome the opportunity to continue our valuable work while ensuring we stick to the current Stage 3 social distancing guidelines,” Cr Taylor said.

“It seemed a bit bizarre that we were being forced to meet face to face when all the other restrictions were urging us to stay in our homes apart from the four reasons of shopping for essential services, medical care, giving care to others or exercising.

“I am very relieved that we can continue to carry out the business of running the City of Ballarat and ensuring we can steer the municipality through these difficult times without putting ourselves in any danger.”

The 6 May Ballarat City Council meeting will be the first to be held remotely.

The meeting will continue to be broadcast through the City of Ballarat website using virtual meeting technology
