The Art Gallery of Ballarat is calling for proposals from artists who are interested in exhibiting their work at the Backspace Gallery. Online applications are now available and will be open until Friday 21 June.
The Backspace Gallery, which is part of the Art Gallery of Ballarat, presents a vibrant program of exhibitions which showcase contemporary art, craft and design and celebrates the arts in our region. The space provides artists and curators the opportunity to exhibit in a professionally supported gallery.
Gallery Director Louise Tegart said that the Gallery was interested in receiving applications from a broad range of artists within Ballarat and the region.
“We really want to hear from people with different backgrounds and whose work reflects a diversity of experiences.
“The Backspace Gallery is a key part of the City of Ballarat’s support for visual arts in the community and we would like the exhibition program to reflect the increasing diversity in Ballarat and the region.
“We are also interested to see how the exhibition proposals might be tied to important community events such as Harmony Fest, Reconciliation Week and Seniors Week.”
Louise Tegart said that the opportunity to exhibit at the Backspace Gallery would provide an opportunity for local artists to develop their skills in presenting their own work to the public.
“We see this as a key professional development opportunity for local artists, to work with professional staff at the Gallery in selecting and preparing work for exhibition, in promoting their exhibition to the public and in dealing with members of the public face-to-face,” she said.
All applications for inclusion in the program are evaluated by a selection committee and are based on the written application and supporting material.
Preference will be given to applicants living or working in the City of Ballarat and the wider Grampians and Central Highlands region. Applications from artists outside this area should demonstrate a connection or benefit to Ballarat or region.
